Chin Correction

(Genioplasty)

The chin is a very important feature of the face.  Therefore, when the chin is too small or receding, it disrupts facial harmony.  Chin augmentation is a procedure that can be performed in different ways. In performing a genioplasty, the bony chin is gently incised and moved forward to increase chin projection.  Although this may sound extreme, it is done through a small intra-oral incision.  Problems with the teeth can be associated with a small chin and are not affected by the genioplasty operation.  If Dr. Howard diagnoses an occlusion, or tooth problem, you will be referred to a dental specialist such as an orthodontist.

In most circumstances, this procedure is done in conjunction with another procedure such as a facelift, neck lift, or most commonly with a rhinoplasty.  This procedure may also be done along with a submental lipectomy, which is a procedure to improve a double chin.  Please not that advancing the chin (genioplasty) can also tighten the neck muscles and improve the neck contours.  This is not true for chin augmentation with an implant.

During your consultation with Dr. Howard, he will examine you to determine if you are a candidate for chin augmentation.  He will discuss recommendations in detail with you at this time and you will be able to share your expectations of the surgery.

The Procedure

The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis.  Most patients are able to resume their normal activities approximately one week after surgery.  You may experience numbness, swelling, discoloration and some discomfort for about 5 to 7 days following surgery.

The incisions are usually made inside the mouth just above the crease below the lower lip and gum.  If this procedure is done along with a submental lipectomy (as mentioned above), the incision will be placed near a crease under the chin.
