The Problem Neck:
Submental Lipectomy
Having a bad neck day? Most of us, with aging, develop an excess amount of skin, lax muscles and excess fat below the chin. This accumulation may give the appearance of a double chin. Double chins may be lessened by a procedure known as Submental Lipectomy, which simply means removal of the fat under the chin. Submental lipectomy may be performed along with another procedure, such as a chin augmentation or facelift. Tightening of the neck muscles may be performed at the same time of a facelift or to improve the results of a submental lipectomy. When muscle tightening is accompanied by fat removal and neck skin tightening the procedure is referred to as a Neck Lift. The neck lift may be performed by itself of in conjunction with other facial procedures. The Procedure During this procedure, an incision is made under the chin, and the skin and muscles of the neck are tightened. If the condition is extreme, consisting of bands of loose skin extending from the chin to the base of the neck, other incisions may be used to tighten the neck skin (neck lift) and achieve a better surgical result (see facelift). If a submental lipectomy is the only procedure performed, it is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. The procedure may take less than any hour, unless it accompanies another procedure.
